starbucks lover

$510.00

24×36

Set against a dark background, the gold leaf in this piece almost feels suspended, like scattered light or fragments of something burning out slowly. The contrast between the matte black paint and reflective gold creates a depth that shifts depending on outside light. Despite the heavy palette, I never saw this painting as hopeless. The gold breaks through too insistently for that. The title Starbucks Lover came partly from the absurdity of it. Something dramatic and cosmic paired with something oddly casual felt more honest to me than giving it a severe name.
